If you’ve recently received your CJTallow order and opened the jar to find a softer-than-expected texture — or even a fully melted balm — first things first: don’t panic. Your product is completely fine. In fact, what you’re seeing is actually proof that what’s inside your jar is the real thing.
Let us explain.
What Happens to Natural Tallow in Hot Weather?
Grass-fed beef tallow is a 100% natural fat, and like all natural fats — think butter, coconut oil, or lard — it responds to temperature. In cool conditions, it stays firm and whipped. In warm weather, especially during a UK heatwave, it softens, becomes more fluid, and can occasionally arrive at your door semi-liquid or fully melted.
This is completely normal behaviour for a pure, natural skincare product.
Here in the UK, we’re not used to sustained high temperatures — but our summers are warming up, and when they do, your tallow balm feels it. Whether you’ve ordered our Pure Unscented Whipped Tallow Balm, our Lavender Tallow Body Butter, or any other product in the CJTallow range, the same applies across the board.
Why I Don’t Add Fillers or Hardening Agents
Here’s something that sets CJTallow apart from many commercial body butters on the market: I never add fillers, hardening agents, or artificial stabilisers to keep the product solid at higher temperatures.
Many mainstream skincare brands use synthetic thickeners, waxes, or emulsifying agents specifically to maintain a firm texture regardless of the weather. It keeps the product looking neat and shelf-stable — but it also means you’re putting unnecessary ingredients on your skin.
At CJTallow, I’ve deliberately chosen not to do that. Every jar contains pure, from certified organic 100% British grass-fed tallow — nothing added to artificially change its texture. What you see is what you get: honest, clean, single-ingredient skincare that behaves exactly as nature intended.
If your balm has softened in the summer heat, that’s not a flaw. It’s a feature.
What to Do If Your Tallow Balm Has Melted
Getting your product back to its usual whipped texture is simple:
- Pop the lid back on and place the jar in the fridge for 30–60 minutes.
- Once firm, remove and store in a cool, shaded spot — a bedroom drawer, a cool shelf, or a cupboard away from direct sunlight works perfectly.
- If it’s fully liquid, refrigerate overnight and it will set back solid, ready to use just as normal.
Pro tip: Avoid storing your tallow balm in the bathroom during summer. Steam and heat together will speed up softening. A cooler room is always best.
Can You Still Use Soft or Melted Tallow?
Absolutely — and many of our customers actually prefer it this way during the warmer months.
Softer tallow glides onto skin even more effortlessly, melts on contact, and absorbs beautifully. If you don’t mind the texture, there’s no need to refrigerate it at all. Simply scoop a small amount with clean fingers and smooth onto your skin as usual.
Whether it’s firm, soft, or somewhere in between, the nourishing properties of grass-fed tallow remain completely intact. The fatty acids, fat-soluble vitamins, and skin-loving nutrients are all still there, working exactly as they should.
Ordering During a UK Heatwave
We always do our best to pack and dispatch orders carefully, but please be aware that during periods of very high temperatures, some softening during transit is unavoidable. If your parcel has been left in a warm porch, a car, or a sunny doorstep, it may arrive softer than usual — but again, a quick spell in the fridge will sort it right out.
If you ever have any concerns about your order, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. We’re a small, independent UK maker and we’re always happy to help.
