Why Packaging Matters Just As Much As Ingredients

When choosing natural skincare, most of us turn the product over and read the ingredient list first. We look for simple formulas, recognisable ingredients, and products without unnecessary fillers or synthetic additives. Understanding what goes into your skincare is an important part of making informed choices.

At CJTallow, we believe that’s exactly how it should be.

But there’s another part of every skincare product that’s just as important, yet often overlooked: the packaging.

A container isn’t simply there to make a product look attractive. The right cosmetic packaging helps protect the formulation, supports the manufacturing process, and ensures the product reaches you in the condition it was intended. For us, packaging is never an afterthought—it’s part of creating high-quality, small-batch skincare.

Packaging Is Part of the Product

Not every skincare product is manufactured in the same way.

Some balms are poured while still warm, while others are prepared entirely at room temperature. These different production methods influence which type of container is the most suitable.

That’s why you’ll notice that some CJTallow products are packaged in amber glass jars, while others come in recyclable PET plastic containers.

This isn’t a design preference or a cost-cutting decision. Each packaging choice is made according to how that particular product is crafted, helping maintain its quality from production through to everyday use.

Why Some of Our Balms Are Packaged in Glass

Our Calendula & Rosehip Balm and Calendula & Chamomile Balm are made using a warm-pour process.

Once the ingredients have been carefully blended, the balm is transferred into its container while still warm before being left to cool and set naturally.

For this type of formulation, amber glass is the most appropriate choice. Glass is durable, stable, and well suited to warm-filled cosmetic products. The amber colour also helps reduce light exposure, providing an extra layer of protection for the finished balm.

Choosing glass for these products supports the manufacturing process while helping preserve the quality of our handmade skincare.

Why Our Whipped Tallow Balm Uses PET

Our Whipped Tallow Balm follows a completely different production method.

Instead of being poured warm, the 100% British grass-fed tallow is whipped until it develops its light, airy texture. Once the balm is ready, it is transferred into its container at room temperature.

Because no hot product is placed into the jar, we use recyclable PET (recycle code 1), a material widely used throughout both the food and cosmetic industries for products stored under normal conditions.

The whipped balm is simply spooned into the container after the whipping process is complete, meaning the packaging is never exposed to hot product.

Selecting PET for this formulation allows us to package the balm in a container that’s appropriate for the way it’s made while remaining lightweight, practical, and fully recyclable where local facilities accept PET plastics.

Simple Ingredients. Purposeful Formulations.

Although the packaging may differ, one thing remains the same: what’s inside.

Every CJTallow product is made with carefully selected ingredients and a commitment to keeping our formulations straightforward.

We don’t dilute our products with fillers.

We don’t bulk them out with unnecessary ingredients.

We don’t add synthetic additives simply to alter texture or reduce production costs.

Our focus is creating water-free skincare using 100% British grass-fed beef tallow, alongside thoughtfully chosen natural ingredients where they complement the formulation. Every ingredient has a purpose, and every formulation is designed with simplicity in mind.

Every Decision Is Made With Purpose

As a small-batch skincare business, every decision matters.

From sourcing premium British grass-fed tallow to selecting suitable packaging for each product, we carefully consider every stage of the manufacturing process.

Rather than using the same container for every product, we choose the packaging that best suits each individual formulation.

Sometimes that’s amber glass.

Sometimes it’s recyclable PET.

In every case, the choice is based on function, product integrity, and the manufacturing process—not trends or appearance.

Transparency Builds Trust

We know that today’s skincare customers want more than a list of ingredients. They want to understand how products are made, why certain materials are chosen, and what goes into every step of the process.

We’re proud to be transparent about both our formulations and our packaging choices.

Whether you’re new to tallow skincare or have been using natural skincare for years, we believe confidence comes from understanding the products you use every day.

If you ever have questions about our ingredients, manufacturing process, or packaging, we’re always happy to help.

Because great skincare isn’t defined only by what’s inside the jar- it’s also shaped by every thoughtful decision made before it reaches your hands.
