CJTALLOW cold processed tallow soap bars, handcrafted using traditional cold process soap making methods in the UK

Cold Processed Soap for Skincare

At CJTALLOW, we believe soap can be simple, thoughtfully made and enjoyable to use. That is why our soaps are made using the traditional cold-process method.

But what exactly is cold process soap, and why does it matter?

If you are looking for cold process soap in the UK, understanding how handmade soap is made can help you appreciate what goes into each bar. From carefully selected ingredients to the natural process of saponification, cold processed soap reflects a slower and more considered approach to soap making.

What is Cold Process Soap?

Cold process soap is a traditional method of making handmade soap without relying on high heat to speed up the process.

The process starts by combining oils or fats with a carefully measured lye solution. The ingredients are mixed until they begin to emulsify and thicken. The soap is then poured into moulds and left to develop naturally.

Unlike some commercial soap-making methods, cold process soap is not rushed through the process. After the soap has been cut into bars, it needs time to cure. This allows excess water to evaporate and gives the bar time to become firmer and longer-lasting.

At CJTALLOW, this traditional method is an important part of how we approach our handcrafted tallow soap.

Understanding Saponification

Saponification is the chemical reaction that turns oils and fats into soap.

When the right proportions of fats or oils and an alkali, such as sodium hydroxide, are combined, they react together. Once saponification is complete, the original ingredients have transformed into soap and naturally occurring glycerine.

This is why properly formulated handmade soap does not simply contain the lye solution used during production. The lye is an essential part of the soap-making process, but it reacts with the fats and oils during saponification.

For cold process soap makers, accurate measurements and careful formulation are essential. Every ingredient needs to be selected and measured with care.

Why we use Tallow in our soap

Tallow has a long history in traditional soap making. At CJTALLOW, we use 100% British-certified grass-fed beef tallow as an important ingredient in our handmade soap.

Tallow provides a rich, traditional base for soap and has a naturally creamy quality that makes it well suited to handcrafted soap making.

Our approach is not about creating complicated formulas with a long list of unnecessary ingredients. Instead, we focus on carefully selected ingredients and traditional techniques.

This is where our tallow soap fits into our wider skincare philosophy.

Why Cold Process matters to CJTALLOW

We choose the cold-process method because it aligns with the way we want to make our products.

We value a slower, hands-on approach. Cold process soap allows us to work with our ingredients carefully rather than rushing the process.

It also gives us the flexibility to create different soap formulations using ingredients such as tallow, honey, goat’s milk, oats, turmeric and carefully selected oils and botanical ingredients.

From our Pure Tallow Soap to our Tallow Goat’s Milk & Oats Soap and Turmeric & Honey Soap, each bar is made as part of our commitment to simple, handcrafted soap.

Handmade Soap with a Traditional approach

There is something special about knowing how a product is made.

Our handmade soap is produced in small batches, allowing us to pay attention to the details throughout the process. Once the soap has been poured and cut, each bar needs time to cure before it is ready to be enjoyed.

This slower process is very different from simply producing a bar as quickly as possible.

For us, handmade soap UK customers can enjoy should reflect care, simplicity and thoughtful craftsmanship.

Whether you are discovering tallow soap for the first time or already enjoy traditional handmade soap, we want every CJTALLOW bar to reflect our approach: carefully selected ingredients, traditional soap making and thoughtful craftsmanship.
