Where our tallow comes from — and why it matters to me
By Victoria · CJTallow
I get asked about our tallow a lot by email, and honestly, I love that people ask. It tells me you actually care about what you’re putting on your skin and mine.
So here’s something I’m genuinely happy to share: the butcher we source our beef tallow from holds GB-ORG-02 certification — the UK’s official organic farming standard. It’s independently verified, which basically means someone else checks they’re doing things properly, not just us taking their word for it.
What that actually means in practice
- The cattle are 100% grass-fed on certified organic pasture — proper British grazing, no grain finishing
- No routine antibiotics, no synthetic hormones
- Raised to strict animal welfare standards
- Grazing on land free from synthetic pesticides and fertilisers
- No airmiles = 100% British — our tallow hasn’t racked up air miles crossing the world to get to you. No imports from other countries, no mystery supply chains. Just good, honest British beef from down the road (Devon).
And why does any of this matter for your skin?
Tallow is already something pretty special — it’s structurally similar to our skin’s own natural oils, and packed with vitamins A, D, E and K. But the quality of the tallow really does start with the animal. Grass-fed, cleanly raised cattle produce fat that’s more nutrient-dense and free from the residues that come with conventional farming.
Basically — healthier animal, better tallow, happier skin. That’s the idea anyway!
I want to be clear — CJTallow itself isn’t certified organic. But I chose this supplier specifically because they are, and because I trust where their animals come from. For a small business like mine, that kind of sourcing decision feels really important. It’s the bit I lose sleep over so you don’t have to.
