Let’s Clear a Few Things Up
Tallow skincare has become increasingly popular, but it also comes with plenty of questions. What exactly is tallow? Is tallow balm suitable for the face? Does tallow clog pores? And why do some tallow skincare products contain no water?
If you are curious about natural tallow skincare but are not sure what to believe, let’s clear up a few things.
What is Tallow?
Tallow is a rendered fat traditionally made from beef fat. When sourced from suitable cattle and carefully rendered, it can be used as an ingredient in soaps, balms and other skincare products.
At CJTallow, we use 100% British grass-fed beef tallow sourced from a certified organic butcher. Our tallow is used in handmade skincare products, including tallow balms and cold-process soaps.
Tallow has a naturally rich texture and contains fatty acids that make it useful in moisturising formulations. This is one reason it has been used in traditional skin and body care for generations.
Does Tallow Clog Pores?
This is one of the most common questions about tallow balm.
The answer is not simply yes or no.
Everyone’s skin is different, and how a product feels or works for you can depend on your individual skin, the rest of the formulation and how much you apply.
Tallow itself has a rich, buttery texture, so it may feel heavier than a lightweight lotion. However, that does not automatically mean that every tallow balm will clog pores.
The formulation matters.
A simple tallow balm can contain only a few ingredients, while other products may combine tallow with botanical oils, essential oils or other ingredients. The finished product can therefore feel very different depending on its formulation.
If you are new to tallow skincare, start with a small amount. A little balm can go a long way.
Why are some Tallow Balms Water-Free?
Another question we often hear is why a tallow balm does not contain water.
Many conventional creams and lotions are water-based. They usually contain a mixture of water and oils, along with emulsifiers and preservatives to keep the formula stable.
A water-free balm is different.
CJTallow balms are made without added water. Instead, the formula focuses on oils, butters and tallow. This creates a richer, concentrated product that can be applied directly to the skin.
Because there is no water phase in the formulation, there is also no need to create an oil-and-water emulsion.
This is one reason a small amount of balm can be enough for areas that need extra moisture and nourishment.
Is Tallow Soap the same as Tallow Balm?
Not quite.
Although both can contain tallow, they are different types of products.
Tallow soap is made through the soap-making process known as saponification. Tallow is combined with an alkali, along with other ingredients such as oils and water. Once the soap has been properly made and cured, it becomes a solid cleansing bar.
Tallow balm is not soap. It is a leave-on skincare product designed to be applied directly to the skin.
So, although both products may feature tallow, they serve different purposes in your skincare routine.
Why Choose Tallow Skincare?

One of the biggest attractions of tallow skincare is simplicity.
A traditional tallow balm can have a short ingredient list compared with many modern skincare products. This can appeal to people who prefer straightforward formulations and fewer ingredients.
At CJTallow, we make our tallow skincare products in small batches. Our balms are water-free and made with carefully selected ingredients, while our soaps are handmade using the cold-process method.
We also believe knowing where your ingredients come from matters. Our tallow comes from British cattle and is supplied through a certified organic butcher.
The Bottom Line
Tallow skincare does not need to be complicated or mysterious.
Tallow is a traditional skincare ingredient with a rich, nourishing texture. Water-free tallow balms are concentrated oil-based products, while tallow soaps are cleansing bars made through saponification.
As for whether tallow is right for your skin, there is no single answer for everyone. Skin is personal, and the best approach is to understand the ingredients, consider the formulation and introduce new products gradually.
If you are looking for a simple addition to your skincare routine, a well-formulated tallow balm can be an easy place to start.
At CJTallow, we keep our approach simple: carefully selected ingredients, small-batch production and handmade tallow skincare made in Britain.
